Brushwood Fencing Construction
The contemporary Brushwood fences we build are constructed in two parts. In the case of a standard 1.8 meter (6 foot) fence the frame is built of 40mm galvanized steel posts. If the fence is being built on the ground the posts are concreted into a depth of 600mm or if the fence is to be fixed into a concrete, brick or sandstone base the postholes are diamond drilled to a depth of 150mm and fixed in place using sand and cement.
It is crucial that the bottom of a brushwood fence is kept dry and does not come into direct contact with the ground; therefore we place the fence on 100x100mm treated pine slabs. These slabs can be stacked to then act as a retainer to hold back the soil.
The posts are placed at a maximum of 2.4 meter centres. Then a 20mm galvanized steel rail is secured between the 40mm posts. When the seven galvanized wires are tensioned the whole structure is secure. The fence is then packed tight with brushwood and further tension applied by using clips at 300mm centres. This technique has over time proven to be the ultimate method to ensure a long lasting structure.
The fence is then trimmed off to the height of the posts and brushwood is “rolled” over the top of the whole fence. This protects it from decay and gives the fence a clean defining line that enhances the overall design and landscape of your garden.
